Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, REDLANDS SYMPHONY ASSOCIATION will use grant funds to expand and deepen arts exposure opportunities for middle school students enrolled in the symphony’s four school district partners with an emphasis on engaging marginalized students including those attending Title 1 schools.

Organization Summary

The Redlands Symphony was founded in 1950 by Dr. Edward C. Tritt as the University-Community Symphony Orchestra, an adjunct organization to the University of Redlands.

The symphony is now an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit performing arts organization with a six-concert season in its home venue and summer and community concerts throughout the region. This year, the symphony added three recital programs in non-traditional spaces and “open rehearsal” opportunities for selected concerts allowing attendees the chance to see and hear how the symphony prepares.

In 1998, the Redlands Symphony established OrKIDstra, a free youth concert series for 4th and 5th grade students in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Annually, OrKIDstra provides arts enrichment opportunities to approximately 10,000 students. A new program providing season concert tickets for middle school students and their parents was introduced this year and the symphony continues its free ticket program for high school students. More than 150,000 students have participated in these various music education programs since 1998.

Upon the retirement of Maestro Jon Robertson, Redlands Symphony announced the appointment of Ransom Wilson as Music Director, promising a future in which the orchestra will soar to even greater artistic heights.

The orchestra has received several “exemplary” ratings from the California Arts Council.
