With support from the California Arts Council, REDISCOVER CENTER INC will work with out-of-school-time youth organizations in LA County to provide underserved youth ages 8-12 with hands-on sculpture education in semester-long classes that integrate assemblage, sustainability, and practical skills-building modules, “rediscovering” household and community waste materials as an art medium.
Rediscover provides educational programs at the Rediscover Centers in Culver City and Mid City Los Angeles and in facilities co-created with school and community partners across Los Angeles County. Our programs include drop-in crafting and tinkering sessions, ongoing classes, workshops, camps, and public engagement activities at school events, libraries, museums, and community festivals. These educational programs use “creative reuse materials”: scrap, overstock, and other waste donated by local businesses and households that Rediscover diverts from the waste stream. Rediscover’s programs engage children’s creativity with these inspirational materials, skills building including the use of power tools, and a supportive child-centered creative workspace.
