With support from the California Arts Council, Rancho Los Cerritos will engage Griselda Suárez, a noted educator in cultural studies at Cal State Long Beach, a community activist, and Executive Director for Arts Council for Long Beach, to assess how we can use art and history to better represent our community in a fully inclusive manner. She will then then develop and conduct cultural sensitivity workshops for our staff, volunteers and board of directors.
The arts are central to telling the story of Rancho Los Cerritos. We offer education programs for visitors of all ages, including concerts, lectures, historical theater, house and garden tours, and arts workshops. While we are a museum of history, we are also an arts organization due to the integral role of the arts in our programming.
Adobe Days Revisited – About 6,000 4th grade students visit the Rancho for this unique program combining environmental theatre with history. Students travel back to 1878 where they meet residents and workers at the Rancho, learn chores, study artifacts, and learn games and handicrafts.
Creation Station – Over 100 family members participate in this monthly program in period craft making.
Festivals –Mud Mania and Old Time Christmas attract 600-1000 visitors each, and engage a multi-generational audience with historically authentic, deeply engaged arts programming.
Free Summer Concert Series – Features local and nationally known touring musicians.
In response to COVID-19, the Rancho began creating and distributing online content that is engaging and accessible. So far, we have served over 15,000 virtual visitors with virtual tours of the adobe home, exhibits highlighting the stories of the diverse people that shaped Southern California, “About our Gardens” videos, “Storytime”, award-winning program “Long Ago Long Beach”, and our very first virtual summer concert.
