Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Playhouse Arts will offer arts education programs in 7 local elementary schools. The program consists of 8 to 10 weeks of instruction each in mask making, mask performance, and shadow puppetry for a total of 24 to 30 weeks. Workshops will be taught in 2 to 4 classrooms at each school ranging from 1st to 6th grades. The students will receive dynamic arts instruction from teaching artists and will conclude with a short performance for the community.

The Arcata Playhouse: an intimate 150 seat theatre with state of the art streaming capability

Excite and Ignite: an initiative designed to empower youth to produce, promote and play in the arts. This multipronged initiative includes:
Apprentice Entertainment: engaging students in 9th through 12th grade
Playhouse Artists in Schools: placing teaching artists in schools
Playhouse Workshop Series: workshops throughout the year
The Playhouse Family Fun Series: performances aimed at youth of all ages and their families.
Skue-Yech Son-ee-nah: Yurok Wellness collaboration with traditional stories and shadow puppetry
The Round Story: a multi-year project which brings members of our small rural community together to address racial equity, social justice, and the changing of our demographic.
The Round Story: Migrations, Walking Together, a free community procession and performances
Our Space: a studio space for our houseless community
The Wonder Wagon: art supply/music/theater wagon of family fun that moves throughout our region
Playhouse Presents: Arcata Playhouse presents ouring artists, musicians, theatre troupes, indie films and lectures at the Arcata
Playhouse Outdoor Events: creating free outdoor spectacles and festivals and offering lights, sound and tents for artists
Community Art Installations: Keep the Jolly Giant, Art on the Fence, street mandalas on 8th and 9th Streets
Humboldt Hot Air: LPFM 94.7 community forward radio
Playhouse Makers Space: equipped with tools and craft supplies that are available to local artists
Artist Advocacy:civic, state and national advocacy for rural artists
Steering Committee Member of the Humboldt Creative Alliance (HCA) and Northern California Association of NonProfits (NORCAN)
Festivals: Zero to Fierce Festival, Family Fun Series, Porchfest, Fairyfestival, One Village Many Peoples Multicultural Festival
Original theater works: The Littles, The Valiant Red Rooster, A Womans Place is in Her Home,
