With support from the California Arts Council, Oakland Youth Chorus will send a team to the Northern California Orff Schulwerk Association intensive Mini-Conference in Hidden Valley, CA. Our Executive Director, who oversees elementary programming, Artistic Director, who leads our middle and high school programming, and four of our lead teaching artists working in our elementary in-school and music and literacy integration programming will attend to deepen our curriculum development.
OYC is a TK-12 comprehensive youth choral music education organization. Through our in-school programs, after school Choruses, and our advanced Concert Chorus and Chamber Singers ensembles, OYC provides music instruction and community building performance opportunities that increase confidence, community engagement, musical skills, and creativity.
OYC trains youth in a varied repertoire, supporting artistic diversity by providing programs that reflect and contribute to the cultural richness of our region. OYC’s young people develop close friendships, multicultural respect, and a lifelong love of music, changing lives and our world through the power of the human voice.
In FY20, our programs had grown to serve 30 primarily Title 1 school partners and engaged over 2000 youth across the East Bay. While the impacts of COVID have reduced our scope by nearly half in FY21, we continue to pursue our mission and vision, working with schools and families to adapt to current pandemic circumstances and rebuild for the future.
