Project Description

National Academic Youth Corps DBA Sojourner Truth African Heritage Museum (SOJO) offers programs and services that educate youth, families, and the community about diversity, inclusion, and history by engaging them in hands-on art making, cultural opportunities and educational experiences. Our mission is to open minds and change lives through the exploration and celebration of African American history, experiences and culture through art and wellness education and outreach. Our vision is of a world in which the adversity and achievement of African Americans inspires everyone toward a greater understanding of acceptance and unity. The primary goal of the Sojourner Truth African Heritage Museum is to create a safe and structured creative learning environment for children, young adults, families, and community members from economically disadvantaged communities. Since 1996, SOJO has achieved this goal through the provision of a responsive and diverse portfolio of programs including arts classes in schools, family art sessions, community art projects, artist and small business marketplaces, and festivals. In addition to the school and community-based programs, SOJO also serves as the only museum in South Sacramento for visitors to tour art, artifacts, and multicultural murals within the Florin Square location. Our multicultural programming and the diversity of our participating artists is key as all members of our truly diverse Sacramento community are recognized, celebrated, and included in all aspects of our organization. We believe that art is an essential, encompassing life element that has the ability to produce an environment that fosters the productive cultural exchange of ideas.
