With support from the California Arts Council, Nā Lei Hulu I Ka Wēkiu will present “I MUA – Hula in Unusual Places,” a dance theater program that features traditional hula movements set to a wide range of non-Hawaiian music and influences. Nurturing the natural progression and continued evolution of an ancient art, our production will reflect upon the ongoing impact of global influences upon indigenous cultures, within a format that is progressive, provocative, and yet still genuinely Hawaiian.
Reflecting a commitment to perpetuating the ancient traditions of Hawaiian culture, Na Lei Hulu i ka Wekiu conducts ongoing weekly hula classes for beginning, intermediate and advanced levels, and we have brought in Hawaiian masters to teach workshops on topics such as Hawaiian language, Hawaiian history, hula lineage and protocol, and the art of flower lei and traditional implement making. Over the years, Na Lei Hulu’s public performances have included participation in hula competitions, and appearances at a wide variety of Hawaiian and non-Hawaiian events nationwide. We have also self-produced our own hula performances since 1987 and have a well-earned reputation in the community for the quality of our programming, as we aim for new artistic heights in perfecting the combination of choreography with lighting, sound, and other production elements to enhance the artistic product we offer.
