Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Monterey Jazz Festival will implement the Monterey Jazz in the Schools program providing high quality jazz music education at 19 schools in Monterey County, serving 750 youth. Teaching Artists partner with band directors to identify music that develops students’ ability to worth together as a band, play the rhythms and language of jazz, and express themselves through improvisation, while performing side by side with the professionals.

Organization Summary

MJF offers a year-round calendar of jazz education programs that serve over 3,000 middle and high-school students locally, nationally and internationally. Through instruction and performance, these programs help fill the gap of local schools’ limited music programs and provide extensive performance opportunities. Programs include:

**All-Star Program: Three ensembles: Middle School Jazz Combo, Regional High School Jazz Band and Vocal Ensemble are comprised of the top young jazz musicians from the Monterey County area.
**Summer Jazz Camp: Students, musicians, and vocalists from across Monterey County are invited for intensive jazz study with MJF Artists-in-Residence, and professional teaching artists.
**Next Generation Jazz Orchestra: 21 top high school musicians act as jazz ambassadors, representing Monterey to the world and performing at the Festival.
**Next Generation Women in Jazz Combo: 5-6 of the top female high-school jazz musicians perform at selected schools and at the Festival.
**Instrument Lending Program: The Monterey Jazz Festival supports our local schools by providing instruments for loan during the school year at no cost to the school.
**Artist-In-Residence: Each year, Monterey Jazz Festival names an internationally renowned Artist-in-Residence (AIR) who works year-round with MJF’s education programs, providing young musicians with unique performance and clinic opportunities.
**Jazz Uplifts: Three professional jazz concerts, followed by learning opportunities through interactive workshops.
**Online master classes, workshops, and a recently produced web series “Welcome to the Sands Box” with former Artist in Residence, GRAMMY-nominated pianist Christian Sands, sharing jazz theory, best practice and unique interviews with professional artists all through the MJF YouTube Channel for free.
**Trading Fours: A jazz ensemble for intermediate to advanced adult musicians.
**HBCU Outreach programs include a year of engagement that include an HBCU Jazz Combo Challenge, HBCU Festival Internship Program, panel discussions on Career Pathways in the Music Industry and an on-campus visit by MJF Artist-in-Residence.
