What began as a vaudeville and silent movie theatre in 1915, where Charlie Chaplin appeared, continues to be a vibrant part of the Bay Area’s cultural life today bringing together professional performers, emerging-talent and youth, and a creative force behind exciting new works. The 501(c)(3) organization which now owns and manages the building and its programs, was founded in 2000 by Artistic Director Lucy Mercer, who undertook a massive refurbishment program to restore the near-derelict space as a working theatre, opening the doors in 2003. The 142 Throckmorton Theatre is now a 200- seat venue with proscenium stage and full lighting, sound and live-streaming capabilities, a mezzanine lounge, green room, two additional smaller performance/rehearsal spaces, scenic workshop, production and technical offices, concession facilities, and public gallery space. It is located in downtown Mill Valley, California, a suburb of San Francisco, with easy access via public transit. Pre-pandemic, we served 50,000-plus attendees and participants annually, primarily from Marin County, but also visitors and participants from the wider Bay Area. Our theatre is busy most days of the week (pre-pandemic) with musical theater (both professional productions and youth theatre), contemporary and classical music, comedy shows, film festivals, music festivals, after school programs, summer camps, workshops, master classes, chorus, dance and improv classes. The 142 Throckmorton Youth Theatre program is well-respected and serves 300-plus youth per year, many participants attending for many consecutive years, with a demonstrably positive impact on life and educational outcomes for many youth.
