Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, LTSC COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION will support the artist Kenji Liu to produce five place-based community workshops that draw on Little Tokyo’s own community vision for a sustainable, healthy neighborhood. By practicing arts and mindfulness-based activities historically done at five local sites, such as writing, drawing, baking, herbalism, and altar making, we will anchor local memories and reimagine possibilities for the neighborhood together.

Organization Summary

Originally founded to serve the monolingual Japanese living in Little Tokyo, LTSC continues to serve this population and has since expanded to serve the broader Japanese American population throughout Southern California. The long-term vision for LTSC’s work in Little Tokyo has been and continues to be to revitalize it as a vibrant community, promoting and preserving its unique cultural heritage, and stimulating its economic health. As LTSC gained experience its work expanded to address the needs of disadvantaged groups of all ethnicities and backgrounds. Today, LTSC collaborates with community-based organizations that are addressing needs in low-income communities throughout Los Angeles. Using innovative arts-based strategies and solutions to achieve agency goals and strengthen cohesion among staff is an integral part of this evolution.
