Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Los Cancioneros Master Chorale (LCMC) will continue to pursue its mission of performing excellent, diverse and collaborative choral music for Torrance, the South Bay and the greater Los Angeles community, with three concerts per season in a large public venue in Torrance. LCMC has performed regularly in Torrance, California since the group’s founding in 1949. Celebrating its 75th anniversary in the 2023-2024 season, the general operating support grant will help pay LCMC’s highly accomplished long-time accompanist, extensive music library storage, new music, extra instrumental musicians for concerts, audio/visual recording services, theater rental, and rehearsal space rental The grant also will support LCMC’s annual scholarship awards, through competitive inclusive auditions, to gifted high-school and/or college-age local vocalists and instrumentalists pursuing higher education in music at California universities.

Organization Summary

The love of singing and appreciation for LCMC’s role in the community motivates the organization to provide educational opportunities to area music students. Since 1984, LCMC has provided over 100 merit scholarships to qualified choral and instrumental students from the LA area via competitive audition. Aspiring young musicians audition annually and are awarded based on artistic ability and academic potential. A performance by one or more past scholarship recipients is included in an LCMC concert annually. In 2018, paid college internships were awarded for the season and most recently for the Holiday 2021 concert and rehearsals. Interns gain valuable choral experience through weekly rehearsals with the LCMC maestro and its diverse members. Scholarship and internship auditions ceased in March 2020 because of the pandemic, however, scholarship auditions resumed May 2022. Two vocalists and one instrumentalist were awarded $3,500 in total scholarships. Scholarship auditions were 5/20/23 at Hope United Methodist Church in Torrance. Out of 13 auditioning, two vocalists and two instrumentalists were notified of $4500 total in scholarships. Winners will be introduced and receive their awards at the 6/11/23 LCMC concert. Artist collaboration, diversity, equity and inclusion are an important priority for LCMC.
