Project Description

With support from the CAC, LITTLE MANILA FOUNDATION will create and expand a Filipino arts (dance, music, & spoken word) community showcase around themes and issues of the Little Manila Historic Site. A major component of the funding will be to provide arts scholarships so that all people can participate regardless of income level. The Little Manila community was destroyed by the building of a state-funded freeway in the 1960’s. We seek to revitalize our cultural heritage to our local community.

Organization Summary

The Little Manila Historic Site stands as a symbol of the worst case scenario outcomes of local, state, and federal public policy upon a marginalized community. The community’s history guides our programs in the arts, education, and our advocacy.

Little Manila Dance Collective and Kulintang Academy preserves and promotes Filipina/o culture through traditional dance and music. It nurtures a multi-generational community of artists, dancers, and choreographers who are passionately connected to folk and indigenous art forms of the Philippines. The arts programs ground themselves in the wisdom and support of cultural resources and artists in Bay Area and the Philippines to promote the proper practice and appreciation for folk and indigenous dance, music, and attire.

Little Manila’s educational programs provide after school multicultural ethnic studies programs at Edison High School. Our students’ advocacy for ethnic studies led for districtwide adoption of ethnic studies curriculum.
