The mission of the Athenaeum is to provide La Jolla and San Diego communities with library resources in music and the arts, and an ongoing schedule of cultural programs, classes, concerts, and exhibitions; to preserve its collections and historic buildings, maintaining an environment that balances conservation and excellent programming; to engage regional, national, and international artists, scholars, and audiences; and to provide learning with enjoyment in the classical humanistic tradition.
