With support from the California Arts Council, Laguna Art Museum will reach out to fourth grade students from Santa Ana schools with a three-part program: 1) A museum docent visits classrooms, introducing the museum and the exhibition Art Colony: The Laguna Beach Art Association, 1918-1935, 2) The entire fourth grade level visits the museum with a tour of the exhibition, and 3) A teaching artist visits the classrooms and facilitates an art lesson and art-making activity.
Laguna Art Museum presents up to 10 exhibitions per year featuring California artists or art with a California theme. The subject matter ranges from California Impressionist to Modern and Contemporary, and often the exhibitions present a strong historical theme relating to Laguna Beach, Orange County, or California. In 2017, for instance, the exhibition California Mexicana: Missions to Murals, 1820-1930 explored the state’s Mexican heritage in art and culture. The museum is interested not only in showcasing California art, both by recognized and under-recognized artists, but also in community outreach. The museum has a well-established program of providing educational opportunities for underserved children through its Santa Ana Art Education Outreach Program. The museum serves nearly 500 children through this program annually. Each November, the museum also hosts Art & Nature, a four-day event centered around art and its connection to science, nature, and Laguna Beach. The event includes a commissioned artwork, scholarly lectures, and a family art-making festival that raises environmental awareness and brings the entire Orange County community together. The museum serves nearly 1,000 visitors over the weekend and offers free admission during the Family Festival. The museum has approximately 1,424 active members, many of whom are longtime supporters.
