Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, La Ultima Parada will strengthen its ability to educate, engage, and honor the cultural tradition of Dia de los Muertos and develop a culturally significant and recognized community in the low-income, underserved, primarily Latino Mayfair neighborhood of East San Jose.

Organization Summary

La Ultima Parada (LUP) showcases Mexican culture through the traditions of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Dia de Los Muertos is a Mexican holiday that brings together hosts of family and friends to remember and celebrate the lives of those who have died, in order to help support their spiritual journey. Modern day celebrations are observed in homes (in rural areas), in the cemetery and throughout the community. Day of the Dead festivities are marked with street processionals, traditional danzas (dances rooted in indigenous cultures) and altars that range from large and elaborate shrines in churches and community centers to humble ofrendas (offerings) in the family home. LUP adheres to these traditions and provides the Mayfair neighborhood of East San Jose with a portal to express their cultural heritage in a culturally specific venue that is well suited to building connections between individuals, their families, their community, and to each other.
