Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, the Korean American Artist Collective will launch an artist project grants program, establish quarterly, California-based events for networking, community building, and education, produce an online Korean American artist map, organize a group exhibit in California, and update our branding.

Organization Summary

(1) Resource Sharing and Education. We organize free online and in-person art workshops for the public. Workshops are held at physical venues, hosted on our Zoom account, and are facilitated by members. We regularly post educational material on our Instagram. We provide workshops and trainings for members and the public on topics such as art and advocacy and Korean/Korean American (KA) history and culture.

(2) Individual and Collaborative Projects. We organize, produce, and distribute collaborative projects, both internal (members within our collective) and external (in collaboration with outside members or groups). We host an online storefront for members to distribute individual works; we participate in art fairs where members sell individual and collective works, and connect with the public. These activities provide a platform for members to receive exposure and a portion of sale proceeds. This year, we are organizing a group exhibit with our members.

(3) Community Building and Networking. Aside from meetings with collective members, KAAC provides spaces of connection via events like panels, artist salons, artist talks, and other networking opportunities. We produce a community newsletter for our mailing list. Our Instagram account connects and highlights KA artists, within and outside the collective. We plan to produce and host an interactive map of KA artists on our website.

(4) Mutual Aid. We organize fundraisers on behalf of movements and causes that are relevant to our community; we have supported Black Lives Matter, voting rights, and AAPI organizations working with marginalized groups. We keep a community care fund for collective members who need emergency support or small amounts of funding to aid their overall well-being. Funds are maintained and distributed by an internally appointed Community Care Committee. This year, we launched an Artist Project Grant program to provide unrestricted microgrants for KA artists seeking support for creative projects.
