Project Description

With the support from the California Arts Council, Joe Goode Performance Group (JGPG) will create an original dance theater performance piece elevating the stories and experiences of middle-high school age youth using JGPG’s signature creative methodologies. This free program supports youth in training and creating alongside dance theater professionals.

Organization Summary

JGPG uses an intersectional equity framework in the design and implementation of all its programming. JGPG centers the experiences of these communities through core guiding principles: Listen and make art collaboratively with the people in the room—their bodies, their stories and their sensibilities.

– New Work: site-responsive installations, in-theater works, and intimate performances in the Annex. Most recently Are You Okay? (2025) Co-directed by Joe Goode and Melecio Estrella was an immersive dance theater work that asked how we are managing in a world that is personally and collectively unstable.

– JGPG’s GUSH Dance Theater Festivals have uplifted LGBTQ+ and QTPOC artists and audiences. GUSH 2020, 2022 and 2024 all featured the work ofLGBTQ+, BIPOC and QTPOC artist. GUSH 2026 will serve as a legacy project for JGPG.

– JGPG artist Wailana Simcock, hosts D.R.A.G @ the Annex, inviting QTBIPOC artists to share their knowledge and understanding of gender in JGPG-produced events and workshops.

– Through JGPG’s partnership with San Francisco Veterans Services JGPG offers 2 weekly movement and community connection classes for veterans and veteran service providers.

– JGPG’s Youth Program: Inspired Bodies, a free youth dance program led by JGPG teaching artists currently has served over 150+ Bay Area middle and high school students in the 2025-26 school year.

– Beginning in March 2026, JGPG is partnering with Open House and Shanti Project to offer PLUSH – weekly expressive movement class for LGBTQ+ older adults and those with disabilities at the Joe Goode Annex.

– Weekly Movement for Humans: a gentle accessible movement class for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. We will continue to host online classes every Saturday from 10:00am to 11:15am.

– JGPG Annex Rentals: accessible studio rental program serving over 8,000 audience members and 90 renting artists per year. Efforts are made for artist-centered access; rentals are offered at below-market rates.
