Project Description
With support from the California Arts Council, Intrepid Theatre Company will create 12 student matinee performances of August Wilson’s JOE TURNER’S COME AND GONE during the run of the Season Eight production. Intrepid will partner with 12 San Diego high schools who will attend the matinees and send teaching artists into these schools to facilitate interactive workshops ahead of their experience of the play. After the performances, students will engage in post-show conversations with the actors.
Organization Summary
Production: Since 2009, Intrepid has produced critically-acclaimed plays and musicals that have earned 14 San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Awards, including top honors of Outstanding Dramatic Production and Outstanding Direction of a Play, each awarded for an unprecedented three consecutive years.
Community Outreach: Intrepid creates arts-based outreach initiatives such as Perform Peace (a collaboration with the Kroc Center for Peace and Justice and Somali Family Service of San Diego) and Exiled Voices: The Refugee Art Experience (in collaboration with SAY San Diego). These programs cultivate empathy for vulnerable or misunderstood populations in our community through visual and performing arts.
Education: Intrepid has served over 120,000 students with our Shakespeare for a New Generation Education Tour that takes live theatre into classrooms throughout Southern California. Intrepid also offers after-school drama classes and summer drama camps, serving over 500 students a year.
