Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, INTREPID SHAKESPEARE COMPANY will create and teach a curriculum for high school students focused on ten plays of August Wilson, an iconic playwright who chronicled the African-American experience through ten different decades of American history. The curriculum will supplement English and Theatre classes and deepen students’ understanding of the social and historical significance of August Wilson’s work as part of the American literary canon.

Organization Summary

Production: Since 2009, Intrepid has produced critically-acclaimed plays and musicals that have earned 14 San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Awards, including top honors of Outstanding Dramatic Production and Outstanding Direction of a Play, each awarded for an unprecedented three consecutive years.

Community Outreach: Intrepid creates arts-based outreach initiatives such as Perform Peace (a collaboration with the Kroc Center for Peace and Justice and Somali Family Service of San Diego) and Exiled Voices: The Refugee Art Experience (in collaboration with SAY San Diego). These programs cultivate empathy for vulnerable or misunderstood populations in our community through visual and performing arts.

Education: Intrepid has served over 120,000 students with our Shakespeare for a New Generation Education Tour that takes live theatre into classrooms throughout Southern California. Intrepid also offers after-school drama classes and summer drama camps, serving over 500 students a year.
