Organization Summary

The Writing Program provides dynamic arts education to between 1500 and 2000 young people annually, and an average of 150 unduplicated students monthly. These youth are incarcerated in one of three Los Angeles County juvenile hall and one Orange County juvenile hall. The Writing Program is comprised of weekly 90 minute creative writing classes, annual Writers’ Retreats and In Depth, a quarterly literary journal. The Alumni Program was launched in 2009 to support Writing Program students in their on-going development of pro-social attitudes, behaviors, and skills that will serve them well as they embark on their re-integration and transition from incarceration. The program is comprised of six interconnected components working in concert to transition former Writing Program students into productive and viable lives after incarceration.
