With support from California Arts Council, Independent Opera Company will provide the community with access to operatic works and other classical music works to create an inspiring experience for opera lovers and to introduce opera and other musical works to new audiences.
In its 13 year history, Independent Opera Company (IOC) has presented more then thirty full opera productions as well as concerts and community outreach performances. One of the missions of IOC is to perform Russian, Ukrainian and other East-European operas that are underrepresented on the LA County cultural scene. Two other key aspects of IOC’s mission are to perform and to create public awareness of lesser-known works, and also well-known works with an innovative approach. The latest IOC productions, Stone Guest by Dargomyzhskiy and Daphne by R. Strauss, both of which were a Los Angeles premiere of this beautiful work and were performed November 2024 and in March 2025, respectively, are a good examples of introducing rarely performed works as well as Eastern Europian music. . IOC is committed to performing operas in English as well as in multiple languages, including Italian, French, Spanish, and Russian. Operas not sung in English include the projection of supertitles, so that the audience is able to follow along with all nuances of the text. IOC strives for the highest quality artistry in all performances, while maintaining an innovative approach. In 2020 and 2021 the company took part in local online livestream concerts to benefit the local singers’ community, as well as a piano solo Christmas concert. In 2021 IOC produced a series of six online concerts recorded at Brentwood Presbyterian Church and St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church. Also, IOC performed a Reopening Gala in September 2021 and Double Bill Mozart and Salieri and Kashchey the Immortal by Rimsky-Korsakov in October 2021. In 2022 IOC performed two Russian operas, Little Red Riding Hood and Puss in Boots by Cesar Qui, as well as the Ukrainian opera Cossack Beyond the Danube by Hullak-Artemovsky, which was a West Coast premiere of this work.
