Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Heyday will redesign its quarterly magazine “News from Native California” and enhance multimedia capabilities on the magazine’s website. “News from Native California” has been a mainstay publication devoted to the state’s diverse Indian peoples, sharing stories, arts, languages, events, and more, for over 30 years. With technology and design upgrades, Heyday aims to share more of this important content and attract wider audiences.

Organization Summary

Publishing excellent books that center California is at the core of Heyday’s programs. We are proud to publish around twenty books each year and the magazine “News from Native California.” Heyday’s publishing work includes the following:
1. Celebrating California Indian Cultural Renewal: Since 1987, Heyday has published “News from Native California” (NNC), a quarterly magazine for and by Native Californians and their allies. Through online communities and editorial initiatives, NNC acts as a network that connects Native California writers, artists, families, and tribes. In 2002, Heyday created the Berkeley Roundhouse, which stewards books by California Native writers, consolidate our sponsorship of events and other media.
2. Exploring California history and fight injustice: Heyday respects historical inquiry as we explore how the past shapes the present and points the way toward the future. We are inspired by stories of resistance and renewal, especially the overlooked story of California’s Native peoples as well as tales of courage and survival from its Black, Japanese American, Latinx, and other persecuted minorities.
3. Honoring California nature and beauty: Heyday publishes books that combine scientific research, beautiful illustrations, and local knowledge. We honor the geological and environmental history of the state, its array of diverse landscapes and habitats, and the breathtaking flora and fauna. Heyday is also committed to accurate information about the challenges and possibilities of climate change.
4. We arrange author and community-facing events that bring new perspectives and voices to important national and regional conversations.
