Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, the Girls Self-Esteem Program will expand our ballet program to offer additional community outreach ballet training and performances to mostly youth in under-served communities. The themed event will focus around the only multicultural Nutcracker in Northern California which features our classical ballet school students who are 98% African American and Mexican. Funds will support artists and production fees.

Organization Summary

In 2009 Dance Theater of Harlem Prima Ballerina NaTalia Johnson was invited from New York to perform for 25 girls ages 2-12 during our mentoring graduation ceremony in Sacramento. She returned to perform once a year. In 2013 G-SEP invited Ms. NaTalia to teach a ballet class for girls in Oak Park and Del Paso Heights. More than 100 African American parents brought their daughters to take the free class. That same year G-SEP put a dance floor in our building and invited Ms. NaTalia (who was injured and had just finished dancing the lead in a network television ballet in Los Angeles) to recover in Sacramento -and teach a few ballet classes. That year she staged the first Nutcracker in Oak Park 2013. To date more than 500 children have taken our free outreach ballet classes and more than 7,000 audience members have enjoyed the Nutcracker in Oak Park and our other ballets.
