With support from the California Arts Council, Girls Empowerment Through the Arts (GETA) will facilitate collaborations between artist-educators and girls of color to create empowering artistic works that develop each girl’s ideas and voice and enhance the skills they need to navigate and challenge stereotypes and injustices in their communities.
The GETA program will bring together a collaborative team of artist-educators to support girls of color to create an artistic work (from start to finish) that taps into their experiences navigating personal and societal challenges associated with racism, racial inequality and injustice.
The curriculum is structured to be taught in 12 weeks. Students are introduced to a range of artistic practices by bringing in experienced artist-educators of color and showing videos of these artists and other artists expressing their craft. After students have identified their areas of interest, they work with the artist-educators to brainstorm potential ideas for the artistic work they will create alone or with other students for the duration of the program. The artistic practices students are able to choose from focus on the power of voice and language: poetry, song writing, and creative writing.
Throughout each stage of the program the emphasis is on encouraging self-expression, building self confidence, collaboration, cooperative learning, creative expression, leadership skills, and positive sense of self. This youth-centered pedagogical approach embraces students of all abilities and at all levels and allows girls to tap into their intellectual and artistic talents and create their own narratives. Throughout the program girls present their ideas to one another, learn how to give constructive feedback, and practice their communication, collaboration, and advocacy skills. At the end of the program, students present their work to each other in a community showcase, celebrate their accomplishments, are assigned a mentor, and earn a GETA Certificate.
The GETA program is offered free of charge in after school programs and community centers. Students are recruited from a wide range of local programs. During the COVID-19 pandemic the program will be offered via the Internet or in person with small groups of students.
