Project Description

GALS LA will partner with a local artist to provide four Girl Empowerment (mural) and Visioning the Future (poetic film) Workshops after school integrating media arts and social emotional development for at least 80 girls between the ages of 10-13 in 2023-2024.

Organization Summary

GALS closes gaps with our unique education model with the core service components:
1. GALS LA provides a safe and supportive single-gender environment. Dr. Cornelius Riordan, an educational researcher and professor of sociology at Providence College, found that the performance of minority students in single-gender schools is stronger on all tests, on average, and almost one academic year above that of their peers in co-educational settings. Further research indicates the unique ability of all-girls settings to identify how girls learn and succeed and, as a result, provide “a certain comfort level that helps them develop greater self-confidence and broader interests, especially as they approach adolescence.”

2. We address the “whole child’s” developmental needs (academic, social emotional, physical, creative development) as a way to advance educational equity and ensure that every child reaches their fullest potential.
GALS Inc.’s education system is grounded in racial equity that gives each student exactly what they need to be successful in school and to thrive beyond the classroom. We provide a rigorous and inclusive learning experiences where each student feels seen, heard, and valued as part of a community; expanding the definition of student success beyond academics to include both well-being and academic achievement and; centering the voices of Black, Brown, and Indigenous students and their caregivers in decisions about how the education system can help students flourish and thrive.

3. GALS LA taps into the benefits of physical activity, healthy eating, wellness and sports to develop our students. Research indicates that physical activity has positive, cognitive effects on academic achievement and the self-development process. Some of the distinct benefits of engaging in physical activity for girls include an enhanced body image, self-esteem, and sense of confidence. Girls who exercise are less likely to be sexually active and to become pregnant.
