Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, the Brentwood Art Center will offer a free, yearlong art program for veterans at the Westwood and Long Beach VA. The goals of the program are to teach visual literacy skills, to empower veterans to express their creativity in a safe and nurturing environment, to support and respond to the unique needs and abilities of veterans, and to elevate the voices and experiences of veterans with opportunities to exhibit and promote their work publicly.

Organization Summary

Brentwood Art Center (BAC) provides visual arts instruction, including figurative and abstract painting, watercolor, drawing, pastel, sculpture, ceramics, wheel throwing, cartooning, and mixed media, to students of all ages and abilities. Courses are held Monday through Saturday at our new Santa Monica campus, as well as online. BAC hosts free and low cost community art programs throughout the year for the entire Southern California region. It also offers winter and summer day camps for children focusing on drawing, painting, and mixed media. To ensure equitable access to the arts, the Center offers financial aid for those who would not otherwise attend its programs. Program highlights include a Veterans Art Program in partnership with the VA in Westwood and Long Beach, masterclasses on a range of topics and media led by teaching artists, as well as visiting artist workshops. BAC has worked with other nonprofits such as the Al Wooten Junior Youth Center to provide free arts programming online and at the Center. The Al Wooten Junior Youth Center serves more than 400 predominantly black and hispanic students in grades 3-12 annually online and onsite at its youth center in the ethnically diverse neighborhood of South Los Angeles. BAC partners with ArtworxLA to provide opportunities for high school aged students to attend its pre-college drawing programs. BAC also supports a community of more than 50 contemporary artists.
