With support from the California Arts Council, FREEDOM BAND FOUNDATION OF LOS ANGELES will support the growth of our band programs, which have expanded from 2 to 3, our member growth since live rehearsals and performances became viable, and programming growth under new artistic direction. We have paid staff, rental fees for rehearsal and storage, and venue fees for our performances which will be paid through use of these funds.
GFBLA’s core programs consist of a 100+ member concert band, a 20+ member jazz band, a chamber ensemble program, and marching/pep band program of varying constituency depending on the event.
We offer programming in a seasonal format: Fall, Winter, Spring, and Pride (summer).
Concert Band offers 3-4 performances per year, Fall through Spring.
Jazz Band offers 3-4 performances per year, Fall through Spring.
Marching Band performs at local Pride events throughout Southern California during Pride season, often 5+ engagements in 1-2 months. In the off-season, Marching takes the form of Pep band and performs ad-hoc engagements with no physical marching component.
The chamber ensemble program facilitates member-lead chamber groups of 3-6 musicians each, which perform 1-2 times per year in chamber-exclusive concerts and frequently accompany other GFBLA programs.
Annually, we host a member conducting workshop in which candidates are coached through one concert cycle to conduct the concert band through a piece.
