Project Description

Oakland Bloom is a people of color/diaspora-led non-profit that supports poor/working-class immigrant and refugee chefs to access income, connect to direct services, and grow their food businesses. OB works in coalition with immigrant rights groups and immigrant communities of color. Through culinary arts and business training, Oakland Bloom supports poor and working-class refugee and immigrant chef entrepreneurs to start their own food businesses. In an industry that centers white chefs, white consumers, and western palettes, Oakland Bloom’s mission is to encourage chef-entrepreneurs to stay true to their cultural history and expression, and their personal vision of how their food should be made and served, despite social pressure to assimilate or change their food based on expectations from a western audience.
