With support from the California Arts Council, Dancing Earth Indigenous Contemporary Dance Creations will be used to provide salary for a F/T director and to hire a P/T manager.
Dancing Earth Creations (DE) serves primarily BIPOC with extensive local and national dance instruction, engagement workshops, intercultural exchange and community-made performance rituals. Filling an unmet need in the US, we provide hope and opportunity to artists who are outside of mainstream performance due to lack of access and resources. Our constituency represents the country’s most vulnerable and underserved groups, and since our debut at San Francisco’s Dance Mission in 2004, over 75 BIPOC artists have been represented in our work.
We are guided by cultural carriers who are intimately aware of their communities’ needs and co-design our programs as well as advise appropriate themes for widespread sharing for the health/wellness of all people and the planet. By integrating the core cultural values of the communities we serve into an inclusive inter-cultural dance approach, our programming serves as a unique vessel for multi-generational communal and individual wellness. Our approach to land-based knowledge-sharing is accessible enough that it allows people of every background to begin to examine, understand, and move beyond the many and varied experiences of erasure/separation from our ancestral cultures that colonization has created globally. Artistic Director Rulan Tangen is recognized internationally as a cultural artist-leader whose work makes inclusive space for collaboration, integrating intercultural ecological worldviews of her lived experience and those of collaborators into innovative dance theater experiences that highlight feminine leadership, environmental consciousness, and cultural diversity.
