With support from the CAC, Creative Minds NYC (aka Story Pirates Changemakers) will provide a year-long residency in creative writing to second graders at San Gabriel Ave Elementary School. Over the course of 30-contact hours, students will have permission to ‘get weird’ and learn new writing skills through comedy, music, and theater games. The residency will be interspersed with school-wide assembly performances, some featuring stories written by students during the residency.
Story Pirates Changemakers teach and inspire creative writing through high-quality literacy programs for underserved kids and schools, collect stories written by kids, then adapt them into sketch comedy and musical performances. Our programs have made learning more accessible, engaging, and effective for kids, schools, teachers, and families who need it most.
Story Pirates opened in Los Angeles a decade ago in partnership with the Geffen Playhouse, operating through their arts education programming. When the Geffen shifted their focus to exclusively serve older students, the Pirates continued in Los Angeles by obtaining a contract with the LAUSD as arts education service providers and professional development facilitators. To date we have provided programming in hundreds of California schools and have a weekly television program on KLCS, a public television station serving Los Angeles County.
