Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Craft in America will implement the Craft in Schools Education Program, which provides free field trips and workshops to L.A. County’s most underserved K-12 schools. Craft in Schools engages K-12 students by promoting the traditional and contemporary handmade arts through: guided visits to the Center’s temporary exhibits, craft workshops and talks with renowned artists, and public showcases of student artwork at the Center.

Organization Summary

Craft in America is a nonprofit arts education organization, established in 2004, dedicated to the exploration, preservation and celebration of craft and its impact on our nation’s cultural heritage. We produce a Peabody Award-winning, PBS documentary series, with 23 episodes broadcast nationally since 2007. These episodes are filled with artists, techniques and stories from diverse cultures, blending history with living practice. Artists featured in the PBS series include 12 NEA Heritage Fellows and 5 MacArthur Fellows. Content is shared on 3 websites– craftinamerica.org, pbs.org/craftinamerica, and our YouTube channel with millions of views internationally. Websites offer multi-disciplinary, downloadable educator guides that adhere to national standards; artist biographies; catalogs, online virtual exhibitions; and 400+ bonus short videos (300,000+ visitors in 2019). The Craft in America Center (est. 2009) is a micro-museum, library, permanent collection and programmatic space where visitors engage directly with art, artists, and ideas. We give voice to traditional and contemporary craft, ranging from functional to purely conceptual, through personal engagement. Each year, we organize 6-8 on-site and traveling exhibitions featuring work by local and nationally-acclaimed artists, artist talks (100+ as of 2020), scholarly lectures, community dialogs, reading groups, book signings, hands-on workshops, demonstrations, concerts, and publications. The Center provides a platform in Los Angeles for highlighting the work of the nation’s finest craft-based artists–both emerging and established. For those who are not able to visit in-person, exhibitions are digitized and shared on our website and artist talks are filmed and archived online as resources for all to access. In 2013, the Center launched an education outreach program, Craft in Schools, which offers standards-based art education for underrepresented LAUSD and public K-12 schools and local colleges.
