With support from the California Arts Council, the Community Literature Initiative (CLI) will serve, highlight and cultivate poets of color from underprivileged communities through Publishing Classes, World Stage Press and the Sims Library of Poetry. Operational expenses, such as salaries and outreach activities, enable more students to participate in programming.
Community Literature Initiative manages three main programs: Publishing Classes, World Stage Press and the Sims Library of Poetry. CLI’s Poetry class focuses on writing skills and provides an outlet for sharing prose, but also encourages students to share their personal experiences and narratives. Often, the poetry illuminates stories about their neighborhood, their community, and their family. CLI’s class can foster pride in where students come from, and students consistently embrace one another’s narratives, often recognizing themselves in each other’s stories.
The World Stage Press coordinates the publication, sale and marketing of books by new writers, many of whom are participants from the Publishing Classes. A series hosted by World Stage press includes the Living Writers Series, a program created for the enrichment and enjoyment of the high school literary experience by introducing students to living writers and their work. Once a month, Los Angeles writers who have published books visit LAUSD classrooms, and perform their works for students. The readings are traditionally followed by book signings, where interested students are given a free copy of the author’s work. The experience connects students to the lived experiences of poets, providing an incredible personal connection to the material.
Finally, the Sims Library of Poetry is the first black-owned poetry library in the state of California. We aim to engage with the South L.A. community by offering a space to read, write, study, perform, and appreciate poetry. The library now stewards a collection of more than 5,000 books of poetry.
