Project Description
With support from the California Arts Council, CHITRESH DAS INSTITUTE will work with filmmaker/artist Alka Raghuram to engage the community in the process of creating a live dance, music, and multimedia work and a short dance film illuminating the intersection of mythology and pollution of India’s sacred Yamuna river.
Organization Summary
The Chitresh Das Institute’s professional kathak dance company, , Chitresh Das Dance (CDD), is led by Artistic Director Charlotte Moraga and presents acclaimed work in annual home season performances that range from traditional to innovative Indian classical dance and music, to cross-cultural and cross-genre collaborations. CDD toured to India in 2024 and to the Southern U.S. in early 2025.
The Chitresh Das Institute has 9 teachers, four locations with classes in kathak (North Indian classical dance) and 226 students. The pre-professional Chitresh Das Youth Company (CDYC) trains world class kathak dancers who have toured nationally.
CDI believes in the concept of seva (selfless service), which includes creating a school that supports community and presenting performances that address issues important to our communities and focus on social justice.
