Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, CHAPTER 510 INK will offer two sessions of “New Worlds,” a three-month fantasy and science fiction writing workshop for 20 BIPOC queer middle school students during the 2023-24 school year. Black queer writer and teaching artist Duane Horton will work with students to explore topics related to being queer-identified youth of color. The workshop will focus on building magical worlds, creating compelling characters, and taking a voyage beyond, into the imagination. Each student will be assigned a queer BIPOC editorial mentor to help them refine their writing and support students on their path to becoming published writers themselves. The program will culminate in an illustrated published anthology of students’ work, released in December 2024, and a public reading for friends and family.
