With support from the California Arts Council, Cazadero Performing Arts Camp will offer seven weeks of sleep-away summer instrumental music camp in the redwoods of Western Sonoma County. Open to aspiring musicians ages 10-18 from all socio-economic levels (particular emphasis in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties), in-residence music educators work closely with young musicians to grow skill-sets and musicianship in music genres from classical to jazz in solo, small, and large ensemble settings.
Caz offers marginalized and disadvantaged students the opportunity to participate in a collaborative environment with peers and students across economic and cultural spectrums. Caz offers a dynamic program that strikes a thoughtful balance between in-depth music education and performance, coupled with carefree summer camp fun with student peers from throughout the Bay Area and beyond. During a typical year, over 1,400 youth are served through two complementary music programs: Summer Music Camp, and JumpStart in Music. In the Summer Music Camp, participants work closely with skilled Conductors, Music Faculty, and a devoted Camp Staff. Campers develop their musicianship, gain confidence in their playing, make lasting friendships, and deepen their love of music. JumpStart in Music is a low-cost, high-impact, condensed version of our Summer Music Camp, bringing Bay Area public school students, along with their music teachers, to Cazadero for a music immersion program during the school year.
After COVID-related closures for the entirety of 2020, we hope to reopen camp in 2021, welcoming campers back to enjoy rehearsing, sleeping, and playing outdoors. Due to the uncertainty surrounding 2021 programming, we are planning for several possible scenarios simultaneously, including remote, in-person, and reduced capacity, while we await health guidelines for overnight camp operations. All scenarios include a robust scholarship program. Whether in-person or online due to COVID, students will work closely with music educators to develop musicianship, creativity, and artistic expression.
