Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Cat Call Choir will partner with the Women’s Building in the Mission District of San Francisco for a four month creative residency in Fall 2019. Culminating in a live performance, the free workshop series will utilize Cat Call Choir’s artistic process which engages themes of sexual harassment, assault, and other forms of gender violence through satirical song. CAC AIC funds will be used for artist stipends and operational program costs.

Organization Summary

Cat Call Choir was born in 2016 in the Mission District of San Francisco from the need for a more productive response to street harassment. Over the past two years, this one-woman street performance has grown into a revolving group of 23 west coast performers. Most recently, Cat Call Choir collaborated with local contemporary dance company ka•nei•see | collective for it’s second installment of an evening length performance titled NEVERTHELESS. In 2017, Cat Call Choir opened its rehearsal doors to the public to share the creative process and hosted a Story Circle as part of the US Department of Arts and Culture’s program of the same name. In 2018, the choir’s repertoire evolved to include all types of gender-based harassment, video commentary on pop culture, and an archive of songs on SoundCloud available for public consumption. In March 2019, NEVERTHELESS will be Co-Produced by Z Space in San Francisco and will include a pre-show gallery exhibition of artists exploring similar topics.
