Project Description

With support from the CAC, BrasArte will commission and document a participatory performance piece by master dancer and choreographer Rosangela Silvestre as the culmination of a 9-month residency that includes workshops inviting community members to explore through movement and music the essence of indigenous and Afro-Brazilian traditions found in Cabloco and the Orixas and to co-create the final performance that will directly engage audience members in discovering the power of those traditions.

Organization Summary

BrasArte presents several annual activities through its arts and culture program. These include:
Yemanja Arts Festival (February), Carnaval Ball (February/March), Camp Erê (June/July), Lavagem (September) and cultural exchange programs throughout the year, among others. These activities introduce and inform community members about Afro Brasilian and other African Diaspora culture and provide opportunities for them to participate in its continued vitalization. Participants create and/or observe artistic elements that represent the rich cultural history of the activity. BrasArte also offers dance/music workshops, performances and opportunities to join in celebrations through parades and at festivals. Since 2000, Camp Ere has immersed over 1,200 children in Brasilian culture. Prior to the pandemic, BrasArte’s ongoing children and adult programs attracted nearly 1,000 new and continuing students to Brasil’s rich and diverse culture on a monthly basis. BrasArte also conducts Artist Residencies that provide opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to deepen their creative opportunities for expression with world-renown professionals who bring traditions that have often been marginalized or are at risk of being lost. BrasArte provides educational programs that bridge worlds, hosting discussions and workshops with artists in Brazil and other countries through virtual programming that is free to all.
