With the support of the California Arts Council, Arts for Learning San Diego will provide Orientation Workshops for the teaching artists and classroom teachers who are participating in our Title 1: Learning Through the Arts (LTA) program. LTA was developed to utilize the arts to narrow the achievement gap and improve academic achievement within 20+ schools in low-income communities.
Our roster of 40 teaching artists specialize in one of five artforms – dance, music, theater, visual arts, and literary arts – making it easy for schools to have a variety of programs. We develop our programs in alignment with California Visual and Performing Arts Standards and work with school personnel towards the goals of enhancing student learning, improving test scores, and increasing parent engagement.
RESIDENCIES are 8- to 32-week school partnerships. Teaching Artists (TAs) instruct students in weekly lessons focused on discrete art or arts integration. Students learn vocabulary, techniques, and concepts; cultivating imagination, critical thinking, and crucial life skills needed to succeed in today’s world.
ARTS DISCOVERY introduce students to diverse world-class performers at their school site in an assembly format. We extend learning through hands-on WORKSHOPS that connect educational content to age-appropriate arts activities.
ARTS INTERVENTION programs address the needs of our most vulnerable students in the Juvenile Court and Community Schools. These students may be incarcerated, pregnant and/or parenting, unhoused, or connected to the foster system. Our programs give youth tools for positive self-expression and support their social/emotional and academic growth.
TEACHING ARTIST INSTITUTE OF SAN DIEGO supports the development of informed, reflective, and culturally responsive TAs through workshops with arts education experts. Topics include classroom management, trauma-informed practices and arts integration.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING opportunities such as workshops and coaching sessions help classroom teachers learn meaningful ways to use the arts to enhance lesson plans and infuse their teaching practice with innovation and creativity.
FAMILY ARTS NIGHTS are multi-disciplinary events that cultivate parent-child connection, family engagement, and positive school culture. We modify FANs for families in military housing sites.
AFTERSCHOOL ENRICHMENT: We are the primary provider of quality afterschool arts programming for Extended Learning Opportunities departments. Students receive 8-16 weeks of instruction in a familiar and safe environment.
