With the support from the California Arts Council, Able ARTS Work will provide students the opportunity to use zines as a medium to express individual identity and its relationship to a group. Using the visual arts to encourage critical thinking and self-awareness, 120 students will learn how to weave elements of design with a narrative to produce an edition of printed mini-magazines (zines).
AAW’s key programs are described below. AAW’s Administrators and Board have strategically planned each service to align with AAW’s mission and to ensure feasibility and financial stability.
Adult Day Programs – AAW has four Adult Day program sites located in Long Beach, South Bay, and San Diego clients. Each location serves between 25 and 35 clients with moderate to severe disabilities six hours per day, Monday through Friday. Staff designs two semesters of courses using creative arts therapy methodology to help clients reach creative, developmental, social, and vocational goals.
Galleries and Exhibitions – About 100 Adult Day clients exhibit and sell their artwork each year through our exhibition platforms. Our current Able ARTS Work Gallery is located at the Expo Art Center in Long Beach.
Accessible Art Workshops – AAW staff teach sequential standards-based workshops in visual art, music, and drama annually to 3,500 3rd through 12th-grade students, with and without disabilities, that attend low-income schools. The program also collaborates with several community organizations and local libraries to bring art workshops to their target populations.
Creative Health and Wellness Clinic – Board-certified music therapists offer individual, group, and whole classroom music therapy in 12-week series at Long Beach Head Start low-income preschools and elementary special education classes. This program continues to expand and currently serves 150 students per year.
