Arts Education - Artists in Schools

Award Amount

$18,000.00

Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Art Division will place students in its program in Para Los Ninos Primary Center (Gratts), providing hands-on art instruction to more than 350 students during the academic year. Our artist instructors will each be at the school for 15 hours/week for 38 weeks. Classes offered will include arts and crafts painting, drawing and ceramics. All of our student art instructors have a similar ethnic and socioeconomic background as the children they teach.

Organization Summary

Art Division provides our students with professional-level training in diverse disciplines including drawing, painting, print making, graphics, video arts, art history and others. In addition, workshops are offered on vocational and life skills and students can access guided museum and artist studio visits. We also provide counselors and programs to help our students set and achieve educational and professional goals including creative writing, self-awareness training, current events/tutoring, public speaking and individualized college/career counseling. Our outreach programs connecting students to community youth (including the in-school program that is the subject of the present request) both expands our reach and provides valuable training for those interested in careers as arts educators. Other activities include exhibitions of student art, international exchange, and public art programs, amongst others.
