Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, ANTELOPE VALLEY COMMUNITY THEATRE will provide free tuition to racially diverse and underprivileged youth to participate in our theater summer camp experience where they will learn stage production and will stage a full junior musical production for a live audience.

Organization Summary

Cedar Street Theater produces three to five major theatrical productions per year as well as hosts a Summer Young People’s Theater Camp. Our productions include comedies, dramas, and musicals, encouraging open and inclusive auditions and casting. It takes a village to stage a production, and Cedar Street Theatre’s talented community of volunteers are from all walks of life, cultures, and professional backgrounds. They generously donate their time, talents, and gifts to our organization.

Our educational 3-week summer program for youth caters to children ages 8-18 who wish to explore their artistic talents through acting, music, games, and dance culminating in a live stage production for the community. The Antelope Valley’s population is 23.8% below the poverty line, so we offer scholarships and reduced tuition to those in need. We advertise our summer youth program on multiple platforms, including our website and at local school districts. No young person who wants to participate is turned away. We collaborate with the local Antelope Valley Community College. They offer classrooms and their stage for free to our summer program. Their staff also runs the technical parts of the show, all at no cost.

We coordinate with the Lancaster Performing Arts Foundation to offer shows to students for some of our productions. These shows are greatly discounted to students and teachers. Our organization performs the shows for free and the Foundation underwrites most of the transportation and ticket costs so that schools pay less than $5 per student. This is a wonderful way to engage young people in the arts and we are proud of this long standing collaboration.
