With support from the California Arts Council, the Ali Akbar College of Music, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious North Indian Classical Music institution, will continue to offer a unique program to teach Indian Classical music on Western Instruments to students in four schools in Oakland, and San Francisco. Focusing on the basic skills and techniques of Indian Classical music, classes are designed for three grade levels (4th-6th, 7th-8th, 9th-12th) and will serve over 120 students.
The AACM was founded in 1967 by Ali Akbar Khan in response to an unprecedented interest in North Indian music. Over the past 56 years, the AACM has trained thousands of students.
Teaching:
The AACM is the only institution outside of India that teaches the classical music of the Seni Gharana in the traditional style.
Ali Akbar Khan’s son, Alam Khan, and his senior disciples teach all of the instrumental and vocal classes. Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri teaches intermediate and advanced tabla classes, and senior disciples of Mr. Chaudhuri conduct beginning classes. Students receive individualized attention in all classes. Typically, nine of the classes are available online as one-way webinars, and the instructors teach private lessons in person and on Zoom.
Concerts:
Performances have always been an integral part of the teaching and learning at the College. Throughout the year we sponsor 10-12 concerts in our own performance space along with free community education programs.
