With support from the California Arts Council, the 6th Street Studios & Art Center Youth Mentorship program will provide three 6-week sessions in 2023. This directly affects 16 at-promise youth, 6 local artists, and enables cultural community connections through public art projects, and exhibitions.
The Studios core programs include:
1) Third Friday Art Walk: a monthly, Gilroy community event which encourages public support of local artists and businesses. Since Oct. 2021, the Art Walk has grown from 8 – 9 venue stops to 14 stops, which include the local galleries and businesses. Each month has a theme such as Garlic City High School Art, Dia de los Muertos, Veterans Art, Film Walk etc.
2) Friday Night Art Walk: A monthly opportunity for artists to sell artwork and musicians to promote their music within the community
3) Creative spaces, offering youth and adult art classes, artist studios (8 artists) and exhibition space. We continue to build art educational programs and offer youth art camp year round.
4) Our exhibition space hosted 12 community art exhibitions with 1000+ attendees in 2022. These exhibitions include 3 youth art shows, one veterans show, one show dedicated to offerendas, and several community calls for art. We also host 12 online exhibitions open to anyone to exhibit within our themed shows.
5) Our onsite Artists in Residency Program: supports individual artists by providing work space, paid teaching and mentorship opportunities, community engagement and press coverage, serving 6+ artists per year.
6) Youth Mentorship Program: A quarterly program offering 18+ hours of free mentorship/instruction for at-risk/at-promise youth. We partner with local artists and designers to give them a paid opportunity to serve youth in our community by collaborating with local youth non-profits. Each session takes the youth through inception/design, through execution, and finally a public presentation or exhibition. This program serves 5-10 artists per year, and 15 – 35 youth per year.
7) Art Experience Program: Our Art Experience program allows free access to Art Field Trips and Workshops to high school and middle school students.
