Project Description

Mission: “To engage, educate, and provoke young people and their families with excellent theatre and arts education.”

24th STreet Theatre was launched as a professional theatre in 1997. Founded five years after the LA Riots, the theatre opened its doors to a neighborhood ravaged by civil unrest and a host of urban challenges. Upon opening, 24th STreet was thrust into a neighborhood conversation about why this community needed a theatre. The dialog encouraged 24th STreet founders to reconsider their definition of what a theatre could be. Residents requested school programs, after-school activities for children, and a cultural destination for their community. These conversations helped guide 24th STreet’s evolution to a hybrid arts organization equally committed to professional theatre for English and Spanish-speaking audiences and arts education. Today, the theatre is a community pillar for its low-income neighborhood and a primary destination and resource for K-12 arts education.
