Karen New Year Celebration

Every year, Karen people from across the state travel to Oakland to celebrate the Karen New Year. This year marks the 2,765th anniversary of the Karen people’s historic migration to Burma over 2,700 years ago. The celebration will include a formal ceremony, musical performances, dances, and soccer tournaments—but most of all, an opportunity to enjoy traditional Karen food. Additionally, the Karen New Year will feature a panel session with artists from different sectors of art, including photography, literature, media/journalism, and performing arts. This will be a 30-minute Q&A session. We want the Karen New Year festival to be not only entertaining but also educational. Therefore, our approach is to host a live panel session during the KNY festival.
