On-Call Teaching Artist – School Outreach Programs

Position Summary

The On-Call Teaching Artist supports the ICA’s Learning and Engagement programs by leading art-making lessons as part of ICA’s school outreach programs. Lessons take place at the ICA locations in Balboa Park and Encinitas, as well as at schools throughout the area. This is an on-call position with variable hours depending on school visit bookings and the teaching artist’s availability. The On-Call Teaching Artist reports to the Education Manager.

Teaching Responsibilities

● Implement lessons that are aligned with ICA San Diego’s Valise Project, Explore & Make, and other educational programs
● Ensure that lessons are structured, organized, and effective
● Prepare art materials for learning and engagement program lessons in advance
● Set-up, clean-up, and teach students how to use materials resourcefully
● Document and photograph student projects and provide surveys to teachers and students to gather information about their experiences
● Transport valises and materials to partner schools and organizations
● Store and maintain valises to ensure their longevity
● Develop clear, replicable lesson plans with detailed instructions and adaptable materials, enabling consistent implementation by teaching artists
● Design curricula for new initiatives
● Regularly update existing curricula, activity lesson plans, and notes
● Maintain valises by identifying repair needs and solutions

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
● Ability to teach in a fast-paced environment to different grade levels
● Ability to collaborate effectively with other educators and ICA staff
● Strong working knowledge of Google Suite
● Strong customer service and teamwork experience
● Ability to travel to various locations within the San Diego region
● Must be able to lift and carry 40lbs. with or without accommodation

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
● Demonstrated knowledge of classroom management

● Experience teaching people of varying learning styles and abilities
● Bilingual (Spanish/English)

Required Education and Experience
● Some higher education in Art History, Studio Art, or related field
● Experience with group instruction and/or classroom management
● Valid CA driver’s license or ability to obtain within four weeks of hire
● Upon hire, must be fingerprinted, tested for tuberculosis, and obtain First Aid/CPR certification (ICA San Diego will cover the cost)

Preferred Education and Experience
● Bachelor’s degree in Art Studio, Art Education or related field
● Experience teaching artmaking
● Experience in traditional classroom settings

Work Environment and Physical Demands
The Education Assistant and Teaching Artist will work at both our locations as well as in schools throughout the San Diego region. Lifting and transporting of valise and materials will be required, in addition to frequent standing, bending, kneeling, and other physical movement.

Travel
This role is expected to travel frequently throughout the San Diego region.

Compensation
Hourly rate is $20, and includes teaching hours, prep hours, and up to one hour of transportation to school sites. The ICA will provide a vehicle for your class trips. Should you be required to use your personal vehicle, mileage reimbursement will be available.
