The Scenic Carpenter/Technician is a seasonal, full time, non-exempt position. Applicants must be able to demonstrate high-quality wood and metal construction skills; and be proficient in a wide range of scenic construction techniques. The essential attributes of a good candidate are, the ability to read and follow blueprints and shop drawings, arithmetic and geometry, artistically inclined, pride of craftsmanship, excellent work habits and drive to complete projects. Additional skills in other technical aspects of theatre – lighting, video, audio or running crew come into play once the production is built and performances begin.
Basic Function:
Assists with construction of Pageant sets, props and scenic environments. During the rehearsal and performance periods maintains and repairs sets as required. During rehearsals and run of show performs as a technician or as part of the stage running crew.
Skills and Responsibilities:
1) Possess a working knowledge and be responsible for the safe and proper use of standard scene shop tools, such as table saw, radial arm saw, drill press, welders, circular saws, drills etc.
2) Reports to and makes safety recommendations to the Technical Director and Scene Shop Foreman.
3) Attends and participates in technical meetings, rehearsals, performances.
4) Be responsible for the general “upkeep” and cleanliness of the shop, stage and associated production areas.
5) Works in the summer season as a technician or running crew.
6) Participates in Pageant special events as needed.
7) Other duties and responsibilities as required and/or assigned.
Education and Experience:
1. Four years professional experience and/or Bachelors in Technical Theatre preferable.
2. Strong verbal, interpersonal and writing skills.
3. Complete understanding of backstage etiquette. A good working knowledge of technical theatre practices.
Physical Requirements:
This position is physical in nature. Must have the ability to climb ladders, lifts, stairs, reach above head, bend, kneel, stoop, push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds.
Pay: From $34.00 per hour
Employment is contingent upon the successful results of a criminal background check.
