Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, SCRAP will fortify and expand its Arts Education Outreach programs providing high-quality art enrichment opportunities for students K-12 in San Francisco’s most underserved communities. Working with our community nonprofit partner organizations, we will offer programs free of charge to approximately 1,000 students, 30 weeks a year. Programs will be 1 to 1.5 hours one or twice per week.

Organization Summary

By processing 250+ tons of donated materials each year, SCRAP diverts resources from landfills and gets them into the hands of under-resourced nonprofits, the Bayview Hunters Point Community, SF and Bay area families, artists, and classrooms. SCRAP’s core programs are as follows:

I. Arts Education Outreach
SCRAP in a Box (K-5) and Sustainable Fashion Design (grades 6-12) connect 1,100+ under-resourced San Francisco youth with free, professional arts instruction in after-school settings. Ten teaching artists go directly to 19 partner sites across the city, 30 weeks a year, through partnerships with organizations including YMCA, Malcolm X Boys and Girls Club, Beacon, R.O.C.K., Mission Graduates, and Good Samaritan.

II. Arts and Education Depot
Our Arts and Education Depot is open to the public six days a week. Visitors donate materials and purchase them at 50-80% below retail cost. The Depot processed 43,700+ material transactions in 2025 and provides free school field trips for Bay Area students each year.

III. Community Art Workshops
SCRAP facilitates 36 low-cost art workshops per year led by Bay Area artists, open to the public. Workshops center hands-on making using donated and repurposed materials and elevate underrepresented artists in our community.

IV. Educator Support Programs
SCRAP serves 500+ public school teachers annually through monthly free workshops and two biannual give-away events where teachers shop for free classroom supplies. Each workshop attendee receives a $25 materials stipend.
