Project Description

Son of Semele Ensemble seeks general operating support from the California Arts Council to pay for a portion of production costs and artist salaries, as well as a portion of the PT-salary for our Producing Artistic Director. All production work and staff/artist hiring is done by our Producing Artistic Director, the primary administrator and creative leader for our company. We are in conversation with multiple venues to host our future projects and with your support we will fill all creative and administrative roles within our season with talented, qualified, and capable individuals, and present multiple productions and new work festivals in 2024/2025.

Organization Summary

Son of Semele has served thousands of Angelenos annually through our creative work. To date, we estimate that SoS has been the producer of 200 different events, which have been attended by over 23,000 people. We are currently in residence at Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC), a community college in Valley Glen. The artistic opportunities offered to LAVC students from this partnership will deepen SoS’s impact and expand our creative reach. For example, we are currently hiring three summer interns from LAVC’s Theatre Arts program to assist us with a summer theatre arts enrichment camp, and we anticipate that this camp will become part of our annual programming.

PRODUCTIONS & EDUCATION

Our productions are developed and produced through a collaborative approach and are selected by the Artistic Director based on their artistic potential. Typically, our productions receive 8-15 ticketed public performances over 2-4 weeks. They have served many thousands of Angelenos. Additionally, this year we are producing our first summer theatre camp for high school students, an extension of a new and exciting direction for the company.

NEW WORK SUPPORT

Our annual Creation Festivals for new work supported solo work, devised work, and short-form plays. For 10 years, they’ve fostered community and exposure for like-minded artists and their networks. Artists receive administrative, marketing, and artistic support to create their work, which is presented for 1-4 weeks. As many as 1,200 Angelenos have annually attended Creation Festivals. Additionally, our Commissions and Workshops have supported new work, either directly to playwrights in the form of a commission, or through funded workshops exploring a more collaborative process to new play development. In the last two years, we have commissioned “This is the Subtext,” a new play by Brian James Polak, and “Independent,” a verbatim theatre piece exploring democracy in Ukraine.
