With support from the California Arts Council, @Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights@ will engage immigrants, refugees, asylees and DACA-mented youth in the creation of an artist community at the new Los Angeles Immigrant Welcome and Empowerment Center in Pico-Union which would culminate with murals and member art in both a visual and mixed-media format.
CHIRLA is a California leader with national impact made of diverse immigrant youth, families, and individuals who act as agents of social change to achieve a world with freedom of mobility, full human rights, and true participatory democracy. CHIRLA was formed in response to the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986 which made hiring undocumented workers illegal, thus creating a situation ripe for worker exploitation and abuse. CHIRLA’s programming in community education, community organizing, legal services, civic engagement, policy, advocacy, the arts and youth leadership development has served immigrant communities. These programs and services are a means to a broader movement where CHIRLA organizes and serves individuals, institutions and coalitions to build power, transform public opinion, and change policies to achieve full human, civil and labor rights and drive progressive social change.
